The University of Minnesota tennis team looks to build on its great start to the season, as they host South Dakota and St. Thomas on Saturday. The Gophers will square off against the Coyotes at 10 a.m. and take on the Tommies at 3 p.m.
The Gophers are coming off of a 2-0 home opening weekend, as they defeated Drake University and Marquette. Minnesota’s 5-0 start is their best since 1997, a year in which they started the season 9-0. South Dakota is 1-2 on the season, while the Tommies make their spring season debut against the gophers.
Previous Match
Minnesota is coming off a 7-0 victory against Marquette, their second win in as many days. The Gophers started strong en route to winning the doubles point. They carried momentum, as they posted victories at all positions. This marks their best start in 25 years, as Minnesota will attempt to remain unbeaten on Saturday.
The Competition
South Dakota most recently played in Minnesota in September, as they participated in the Gopher Invitational. The Gophers went 7-1 in singles against South Dakota, and 8-2 in doubles matchups. They are 1-2 on the year, with a 4-0 loss against Drake, their common opponent thus far with the Gophers. Minnesota most recently played a dual match against South Dakota in February 2020, a 7-0 victory for the Gophers in Minneapolis. Minnesota is 5-0 in matchups while South Dakota has been a Division 1 Tennis Program.
St. Thomas begins their first season in the Summit League, starting the year with an in-town opponent. They will take on the Gophers for the first time, in their inaugural dual match as a Division 1 program.
