PALM BEACH, FL – The Terrapins are back in action for the first time in 110 days to take on the conference at the Big Ten Match Play Championship, February 4-5. After a successful three-day pre-season training trip to West Palm Beach, Florida, the team travels 225-miles north to Hammock Beach Resort.
The squad looks to bounce back after a tough fall season where they closed out 2021 with two top-10 finishes. Over the two-day match play event, the Maryland men’s golf team will play the nearly 7,000 yard Ocean Course.
Last season, the Terps finished the event 2-2, picking up match wins against Rutgers and Nebraska.
Participants in the championship include host Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, Wisconsin.
Maryland returns four veterans to the event, including Dillon Brown (Sr.), Dhaviat Pandya (Sr.), Will Koras (Sr.), and Will Celiberti (Jr.). Celiberti will serve as the team substitute. Chris Tanabe (Gr.) and Florian Huerlimann (Fr.) are making their debut.
The tournament will consist of four rounds of play, with Maryland facing off against Wisconsin in the opening round at 8:00 a.m. You can follow the on-course action here.
Rodenhaver’s Take
“We’re looking forward to competing in the Big Ten Match Play, this is typically the guy’s favorite event of year. The match play format is different for us, so we get to have some fun with it,” said head coach Jason Rodenhaver. “We have a good amount of experience coming into this event, we want to play well, but this will help us get ready for Puerto Rico next week.”
Season Outlook
“We had a great off-season; the guys worked really hard.” Rodenhaver continued. “Consistency is going to be key throughout the lineup from the first tee shot to the final putt. But, we’re ready for the challenge.”
