Hawks’ DeBrincat comes in fourth in Breakaway Challenge originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
The NHL All-Star weekend festivities kicked off in Las Vegas with the All-Star skills competition.
First-time All-Star Alex DeBrincat was part of those festivities as he competed in the NHL Breakaway Challenge. In what could be the first of many appearances for the Chicago Blackhawks winger, he certainly made a good first impression.
The 24-year-old had some tough acts to follow which included Anaheim’s Trevor Zegras donning an Average Joe uniform and paying tribute to the movie “Dodgeball.” He was blindfolded and had balloons thrown his way by NHL mascots and managed to score either way.
Not to be outdone, DeBrincat, accompanied by a Mike Tyson look-alike and Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr, paid his own tribute to the movie “Hangover.”
With a full wig and a fake baby strapped to his chest, DeBrincat mixed things up a bit when taking his shot.Instead of a puck, DeBrincat shot a football tossed by Carr into the back of the net and past celebrity netminder Wyatt Russell.
In terms of showmanship, DeBrincat was on par with the rest of the competitors but simply could not overcome one of the judges, St. Louis native Jon Hamm, who only gave DeBrincat a seven on his routine.
DeBrincat finished in fourth place with 54 points. Taking the competition, with some generous judging from Hamm, was Las Vegas Golden Knights’ Alex Pietrangelo with 64 points.
For someone who is not big on showmanship, DeBrincat was able to have some fun in his first All-Star weekend.
Up next for DeBrincat is the All-Star game on Saturday.
