GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Marshall men’s golf team capped off a solid tournament to begin the 2022 spring season on Tuesday at the Loyola Intercollegiate. The Herd combined for a team score of 6-under 282 in the third round, and freshman Ryan Bilby finished 10th overall.
The Thundering Herd came in seventh out of 18 teams with a team score of 7-under 857. Fifth-year senior Noah Mullens and junior Tyler Jones both had great rounds to move into the top 25.
“Great tournament for us this week,” Herd head coach Matt Grobe said. “It was really nice to see three guys finish under par and one player finish even par for the tournament. Ryan Bilby continued his great play from the fall and got a top 10 finish. Noah (Mullens) and Tyler (Jones) had really good rounds today and finished under par for the tournament. Brett (Montgomery) also wrapped up a solid week. It was a great start to the spring for us.”
Bilby shot par or better on 16-of-18 holes for the second time this week and scored three birdies on the way to a 1-under 71. In the tournament, the Follansbee, West Virginia, native shot par or better on 47-of-54 holes, recorded 10 birdies and one eagle. Bilby earned his first career top 10 finish.
Mullens improved his score by another three strokes on Tuesday for a 3-under 69. He moved up 18 places on the leaderboard and finished tied for 24th with a 1-under 215. Mullens shot par or better on 17-of-18 holes in the third round and totaled five birdies, including three-straight on holes 9-11. He ended the tournament with 13 total birdies.
Jones shot a 2-under 70 for the second-consecutive round on Tuesday to also end the tournament with a 1-under 215, and tied for 24th overall. Jones shot par or better on 17-of-18 holes and had three birdies in round three. He finished with eight total birdies.
Redshirt freshman Brett Montgomery scored an even-par 72 on Tuesday and finished tied for 31st. He had four birdies on Tuesday to bring his tournament total to 12 to go along with an eagle in the first round.
Fifth-year senior Brad Plaziak and redshirt freshman Andrew Wyss both improved their scores by two strokes in the last round.
Middle Tennessee held on for the team championship by one stroke over Utah Valley. Kevin Jegers of Middle Tennessee also held his lead finishing three strokes ahead of Joseph Glenn of Utah Valley.
