CHICAGO – Coach Matt Brothers and his defending BIG EAST champion men’s tennis team will collide with Georgetown Saturday in the nightcap of a DePaul doubleheader.
The Blue Demon women’s team will open up at XS Tennis Village on the South Side against Georgetown at 1:15 p.m. with the “Band of Brothers” taking center court at 4:15 p.m.
The men’s team is looking to get back into the winning groove after dropping a trio of tough matches last weekend at the highly competitive H-E-B Tournament of Champions in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Brothers always schedules this event to play against warm-weather opponents who have competed outdoors on a regular basis. DePaul’s first exposure to the outdoor game gives them some experience with an eye towards April’s BIG EAST Championships in Cayce, S.C.
BIG EAST Player of the Year and No. 1 singles star Vito Tonejc continues to be storyline for the dual-match season. The junior from Croatia has eight consecutive wins in duals and is 16-6 overall. Marino Jakic is 6-3 in the dual season, Leon Huck is 5-2 and Matteo Iaquinto is 4-3.
In doubles, the top tandem of Jakic and Tonejc are 7-2 in the dual season and 12-6 overall.
The Hoyas are off to a 2-4 start and have yet to play a match at home. They are 0-3 on the road and 2-1 on neutral courts. They have beaten St. Francis College (Brooklyn) and Binghamton while losing to Harvard, James Madison, Navy and Army.
