SAN DIEGO — The University of Colorado men’s golf team finds itself tied for 12th place through rounds of the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic after what can best be described as a “ho-hum” day for the Buffaloes here Monday.
No. 34 Louisiana State owned an 11-stroke lead after Monday’s morning round and extended it to 15 as the Tigers recorded the best scores in each 18 in finishing the day with a 36-under par team score of 540. All 10 rounds by LSU were under par, including eight in the 60s, as it scored 52 birdies, 13 more than the next team (Washington). No. 15 Notre Dame is in second with a 555 score, followed by No. 67 San Diego (560), No. 8 Washington (565) and No. 45 Nevada (567) to round out the top five.
The Buffaloes were in a four-way tie for seventh place with a 2-under par 286 score after Monday’s morning round. But a 6-under afternoon score of 295 for a 5-over 581 total sent the Buffs seven spots down into a tie for 12th (also a four-way deadlock). In two spring events, CU has had two good scores in each round with varying results from the other three scorers, with the fifth man yet to shoot lower than a 77.
Freshman Dylan McDermott leads the Buffalo charge after two rounds, as he’s in with a 4-under 140 total, which has him tied for 14th on the 7,033-yard, par-72 San Diego Country Club course layout. He had a team-high 10 birdies on the day (tied for sixth-most in the field), with 21 pars, four bogeys and a double. Tied for 10th after 69 in the morning, he got off to a rough start in round two, starting out bogey-birdie-double. But he played the remainder of the round, which featured some wind gusts at times, at 3-under to finish with a 71. He played the par-4s at 4-under Monday, tied for seventh among the 95 competing here.
Freshman and San Diego native Justin Biwer is tied for 32nd following a 69-74—143 effort, after fairly steady down that saw him score six birdies and 25 pars with five bogeys. CU’s stroke average leader (70.3) had 14 of those pars in the second round and the 25 overall are tied for 10th in the meet. He’s also played the par-4s well, tied for seventh-best at 2-under.
Junior Kristoffer Max is tied for 62nd after posting a 74-73—147 (3-over) effort through 36 holes. He avoided high numbers with six bogeys, but managed only three birdies while recording a team-high 27 pars (second-most in the field). Like Biwer, he had 15 pars the second time around the SDCC track, including 11 in a row at one point.
Junior John Paterson is tied for 83rd as he turned in a 74-77—151 scorecard, which has him 7-over par. While he avoided big numbers, he managed three birdies and 23 pars opposite 10 bogeys. He was 5-over combined on the front nine (all bogeys) but played the back nine a little better.
Freshman Jack Holland is in 90tht, having some struggles in both rounds after a 78-77—155 day (11-over par); he had five birdies and 20 pars, but six bogeys and five doubles, with two of the latter coming on par-3 holes. He did end his first round with three birdies on his final four holes, unfortunately sandwiched around one of the par-3 doubles.
“Good days overall from Dylan and Justin,” head coach Roy Edwards said. “But other than that, we were not very good, we continued to make too many unforced errors. It’s a great field here and those types of mistakes have to be minimized. We’ve got to do better tomorrow and if we do, we can move up the leaderboard and beat some good teams – we’re not that far behind several of them.”
The Buffaloes are just 10 strokes out of sixth place, as all but two teams ahead of them in the standings are also ranked ahead of CU’s No. 82 standing in the GolfStat rankings (No. 84 by Golfweek).
LSU had four of the top five players through 36 holes, including Nicholas Arcement, whose 65-68—133 score (11-under) is good for a three-shot lead over two teammates, Garret Barber and Michael Sanders, and Notre Dame’s Palmer Jackson.
