PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) released its weekly tennis award winners from this past week of action today, Monday, March 21. The New Jersey City University Gothic Knights collected three total awards between their men’s and women’s programs. Junior Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) was named Women’s Player of the Week, while sophomore Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) and freshman Olaf de Lange (Maasland, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Schiedam) were named NJAC East Division Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
For the women, yet again, NJCU matched up with another Division I foe on Friday evening, March 18, and, despite the 6-1 team loss (seven-point scoring in DI), junior Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) picked up a pair of individual wins against Loyola University-Maryland down in Baltimore, Md. The New Zealand native started by pairing up with graduate student captain Brittany Waugh (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) at third doubles against the Greyhounds and winning their match handily, 6-2. Then, at second singles, she fought hard after dropping the first set in a tiebreak, came back and won the second set 6-4 and then won the 10-point tiebreaking third set to go 2-0 on the day.
On the men’s side, the Gothic Knights took down perennial CUNYAC (City of New York Athletic Conferece) power Baruch College with ease on Tuesday, March 15, by a score of 8-1 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens. Continuing his strong play of late, Teynie went 2-0. He started off at first doubles where he and senior co-captain Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) teamed up for the 8-5 victory. Then, Teynie improved to 4-0 in singles play on the season – 3-0 at #1 singles – with a 6-2, 7-5, victory over his foe Christopher Tham of the Bearcats.
De Lange collected his first-career singles victory, as well as the second doubles win of his collegiate career. He started off teamed up with junior Ryan Weiss (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) at third doubles for the 8-2 win over the Beartcats, and then picked up a scoreless straight-set win at sixth singles.
This is the first-career award for both Clamor and de Lange, while Teynie adds this to his three weekly honors (two POW, one ROW) from last season.
