GAMBIER, Ohio (April 20, 2022) – The No. 30 Denison University women’s tennis team started its final week of the regular season on a high note as the Big Red defeated No. 21 Kenyon College 5-4 on the road on Wednesday evening.
Playing on the same courts that will host the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament in a week and a half (April 29-May 1), the Big Red and the Ladies produced an extremely competitive round of doubles that saw each match finish by a margin of less than two points.
The duos of Sydney Cianciola and Sarah Robertson (No. 1 doubles) and Monique Brual and Caroline Lopez (No. 2 doubles) both lost 8-6 while Hannah Bradvica and Susan Biederstedt pulled out a narrow 8-7 (9-7) tiebreak win at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Brual won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Robertson was victorious 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 singles to give the Big Red a 3-2 lead.
Then tied 3-3 after a 7-5, 6-2 loss for Cianciola at No. 1 singles, Bradvica brought the Big Red to within a point of the win with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) decision at No. 4 singles.
Lastly, after a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) defeat for Biederstedt in the No. 6 spot, the clinching point went to Lopez with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 three-set win at No. 5 singles.
Denison improves to 11-6 overall on the season and earned its first against Kenyon in its last eight tries, including its first win over the Ladies in the tenure of Head Coach Jamie Scott. Kenyon, meanwhile, fell to 11-9 after coming into the match with six wins in a row and having not lost since April 1.
Wednesday’s action was the final road match of the regular season for Denison, which will now set its sights on its Senior Day and regular-season finale set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, against NCAA Division II Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
