Coquitlam’s Centennial Secondary will defend its B.C. high school senior girls soccer title it’s held for the past four years.
The Centaurs defeated the Riverside Rapids 2-0 in their Fraser North semi-final at the rain-drenched Centennial turf field to clinch a spot at the provincial tournament that will be held June 2 to 4 in Surrey.
Centennial will play Burnaby Central next Thursday (May 19) to determine the zone champion.
Kiera Scott scored both goals for the Centaurs and keeper Katrina Robinson earned the shutout.
Riverside will play their Port Coquitlam crosstown-rival Terry Fox Ravens next Tuesday (May 17) to keep its hopes for a berth in provincials alive.
Fraser North’s third entry into provincials will also be determined next Thursday in a match between the winner of that match and the winner of another Tuesday Tri-City showdown between the Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils and Heritage Woods Kodiaks.
Rapids coach Kenny Jamieson said he saw a lot to like despite his side’s third setback to Centennial in as many weeks.
“It’s really brought a strong competitive spirit within the team,” he said of the rivalry. “They keep showing more cohesiveness each game.”
Jamieson said communication will be key to advancing to provincials.
“Given that all five Tri-City teams are still competing it speaks to the quality of our league and of girls soccer in this region,” he said.
“We will have to bring our ‘A’ game.”
