CHICAGO — The wind was blowing out at Wrigley Field in Friday afternoon’s 10-6 D-backs win over the Cubs, making it a good day for hitters, and Josh Rojas took full advantage, as Arizona’s third baseman finished with three homers. With a chance to become just the 19th player in AL/NL history to hit four homers in a game, Rojas struck out looking to lead off the top of the ninth.
Rojas had hit two homers in a game twice before, but this marked his first three-homer game.
It was part of an offensive onslaught by the D-backs, who hit their seventh homer of the game when Christian Walker went deep in the ninth inning.
Rojas’ first homer came in the third, his second in the fifth and his third in the seventh. The first two homers came off Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks, while the final one came against Mychal Givens.
Rojas’ homers were a part of a huge day of offense for both clubs as the gusts swirled at Wrigley Field, with the two teams combining for 11 home runs. The AL/NL record for home runs in a single game is 13 — also set in a D-backs game, that time vs. the Phillies on June 10, 2019, at Citizens Bank Park.
