SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In a first of its kind addition, the Cal Poly beach volleyball team announced that Brooke Golik, a women’s soccer player for four years at SMU, will join the team as a grad transfer next season.
Golik comes to Cal Poly with a very impressive and eclectic sports background. In high school at Sierra Canyon in the Chatsworth area of southern California, she competed in soccer for four years, cross country for two years, indoor volleyball for two years, track & field for one year, and beach volleyball for four years.
She had success at each one of those sports at Sierra Canyon. She was a three-time All-League performer as well as All-CIF Southern Section Division Four in soccer, was First Team All-League in cross country, and in her one year of track placed second in league in the 800 meters. In beach volleyball, she helped lead the Trailblazers to two IBVL League titles.
After high school, Golik decided to pursue soccer at SMU in Dallas, Texas. For the Mustangs women’s soccer team, she started in 50 out of 51 career games and logged over 3,000 minutes as a center back and defender. As a senior in 2021, she was named Second Team All-American Athletic Conference and United Soccer Coaches Division I All-South Region Team.
As a sophomore in 2019, she scored game-winning goals in back-to-back matches for her two career goals. Off the field, she earned AAC All-Academic honors twice.
“I watched Brooke play beach volleyball when she was a sophomore and junior in high school and really liked her abilities then,” Cal Poly head coach Todd Rogers commented. “I thought she was one of the top players in the country at that point in time and then I found out she was committed to play soccer at SMU. Being a former college soccer player myself I was even more interested.
She’s a great all-around athlete but even more she is an amazing person and a very high character young woman. I have no doubt she will be adding to our team on the court, but I think even more so off the court. Her experience at SMU as a leader there will be invaluable to our team, and I am excited to get working with her on the sand in the fall!”
“When I entered the transfer portal for beach volleyball in August of 2021, Todd Rogers was the first coach who called me about the opportunity to join his program,” Golik said. “He was willing to take a chance on a soccer player like me who had not touched a volleyball in mor than three years and believed I could do it. Those two things alone reassured me that Cal Poly was where I was meant to be.”
At Cal Poly, she will be pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree. She is fifth member of Cal Poly’s incoming class for the 2023 season.
