The Hornets fired James Borrego as coach in April after going 43-39 this season and finishing in 10th place in the Eastern Conference.
Atkinson landed his first head coaching gig in 2016, guiding the Brooklyn Nets for 3 1/2 seasons.
He built a 118-190 record before leaving the team in March 2020. Atkinson then spent a season as an assistant with the LA Clippers before joining Golden State for the 2021-22 season.
Atkinson will be introduced to the Charlotte franchise after finishing his duties with the Warriors, who are currently in the middle of the NBA Finals.
