San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance has started to attract serious attention from the media, as many analysts are coming on board with the 22-year-old’s potential as he enters his second NFL season.
During a recent appearance on NFL Total Access, former Green Bay Packers receiver James Jones continued the trend, going as far as comparing Lance to his former quarterback, Aaron Rodgers.
“I believe we’re looking at a bonafide superstar [in Lance], like Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers,” Jones said. “We had a small sample size of Aaron Rodgers, but all you heard out of the locker room and the people around Aaron was, ‘Just wait. You wait and see.’ That was the same thing for Patrick Mahomes, small sample size, but everybody’s like, ‘Just wait. This kid’s going to be special.’ And that’s the same thing that’s coming out of the 49ers locker room about Trey Lance.”
Jones pointed to Lance’s traits and capabilities, as well as head coach Kyle Shanahan, as the reasoning behind placing Lance in the same company as other superstars.
“Everybody’s saying he has superstar written all over him. There’s nothing he can’t do. He can make plays with his legs [and has a] really strong arm. [Head coach] Kyle Shanahan’s going to put him in really good situations. I think he’s going to be in that category, years down the line, talking about him like we talk about Patrick Mahomes & Aaron Rodgers.”
Lance’s two-dimensional ability was put on display last season, as he rushed for 89 yards on 16 attempts in his first start against the Arizona Cardinals, while throwing for 248 yards on 16/23 passing during his second start against the Houston Texans.
Unlike the other quarterbacks taken early in his draft class, Lance has minimal NFL starting experience, but is set to be the signal caller for the 49ers in 2022, as the team continues to try and ship veteran quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who had surgery on his injured shoulder earlier this offseason.

You can tell it’s the dead part of the NFL offseason when random rankings start popping up across the sports world. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler went to NFL execs, scouts, and coaches, though, asking which second-year quarterback is poised for a big season in 2022. Those NFL insiders ranked the sophomore passers, which Fowler then compiled into his own ranking based on 2022 expectations.
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance came in at No. 5, behind Trevor Lawrence, Mac Jones, Zach Wilson, and Justin Fields. Not so coincidentally, each of those quarterbacks has more starts under their belts than Lance, who started two games in 2021. Lawrence and Jones started 17 games, Wilson started 13, and Fields started 10.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance has been under a microscope over the last few weeks. Every video of him throwing has been analyzed and dissected, with some concluding that the second-year player’s throwing mechanics have not yet improved enough.
“Mainly, quarterbacks work on that stuff away from their coach,” head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday. “That’s like little, little things. But when they’re with us, it’s about playing the game. It’s about how to get the ball out on time, how to not take a sack, how to move coverages, where to look with your eyes, things like that. But those are things real detailed quarterbacks never stop doing.”

Charvarius Ward may be new to the San Francisco 49ers, but he already has a lot of confidence in the team’s young quarterback, Trey Lance. On Tuesday, the 22-year-old passer reportedly had his best practice of the offseason as the 49ers kicked off a mandatory minicamp. At least, it was the best practice of the few open to reporters.
The veteran cornerback was asked about Lance and praised the second-year quarterback while expressing enthusiasm for the team’s future.
“He QB1, so he’s the face of the franchise,” Ward told reporters. “He’s going to show the world this season, I think.”
