Michael Jordan never forgets his beef with other teams. The Charlotte Hornets owner became famous for the “I took it personally” meme, but there’s a reason that quote exists in the first place. When you’re as competitive as MJ, you do everything you can to keep yourself motivated and to beat your opponents.
It does seem like the Hornets owner has mellowed out over the years though. Drafting Duke standout Mark Williams is a sign for Michael Jordan (who played for rival UNC in college). Despite that, though, MJ couldn’t help himself and threw a playful sneaky jab at the rookie he drafted. (via NBA on ESPN)
“Even though you’re a Dukie, I take pride in that we did draft you.”

The Duke-UNC rivarly is one of the fiercest rivalries in all of college sports. The two universities have had bad blood for each other for a long time now. Jordan himself was part of that storied rivalry, with the Hornets owner suiting up for UNC during his college days. It seems that Jordan can put the rivalry aside though, if it means getting the best talent for his squad.
Williams is an excellent selection for the Hornets, who have had major issues on defense and the center position last season. The Duke standout is one of the best rim protectors of the 2022 draft class. Plus, his size and vertical presence makes him an ideal pick-and-roll partner for star LaMelo Ball.
Time will tell if Jordan’s decision to put his faith in a “Dukie” will work out. The Hornets are looking to build off of a modest 2021 campaign and finally barge into the playoffs again.
