GENEVA, Switzerland – Fighting Illini men’s golf rising fifth-year senior, and two-time defending Big Ten Golfer of the Year, Adrien Dumont de Chassart helped Team International claim a 33-27 victory over Team USA at the 26th Arnold Palmer Cup over the weekend at Golf Club De Genève.
Dumont de Chassart, who hails from Villers la Ville, Belgium, finished the weekend 2-2, claiming points for Team International during Saturday morning’s round of foursomes, and in a head-to-to-head matchup on Sunday in the deciding singles competition.
The win marks the third for Team International in the last four events dating back to 2019.
FRIDAY – MIXED FOURBALL
Dumont de Chassart was paired with the Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Year in Michigan’s Ashley Lau (Bintulu, Malaysia). The duo posted a birdie on No. 3 to take the early advantage, and held a one-hole lead until No. 8. Team USA’s Antonia Malata (Seaside, Calif./San José State) and Dylan Menante (Carlsbad, Calif./Pepperdine) picked up wins on 8 and 9, to shift the lead in their favor. Dumont de Chassart and Lau remained one down until No. 13 when their opponents went on a run to win Holes 13, 15 and 16 to claim the point for Team USA, 2&1. Despite the setback, Team International took a 6.5-5.5 lead following the Mixed Fourball round.
SATURDAY MORNING – FOURSOMES
Dumont de Chassart and his teammate, Florida State junior Frederik Kjettrup (Aabybro, Denmark), helped Team International to another 6.5-5.5 victory during Saturday morning’s foursomes matches, pushing the overall score to 13-11. Dumont de Chassasrt and Kjettrup never trailed in the match and led by as many as three after 13 holes before securing the victory, 2&1, over Texas A&M’s duo of Sam Bennett (Madisonville, Texas) and Walker Lee (Houston, Texas).
SATURDAY AFTERNOON – MIXED FOURSOMES
Team USA rallied during Saturday afternoon’s action, knotting the overall score 18-18 with a 7-5 edge in mixed foursomes. Dumont de Chassart, paired once again with Michigan’s Lau, fell to Stanford’s duo of Michael Thorbjornsen (Wellesley, Mass.) and Rose Zhang (Irvine, Calif.), 1Up. The match teed off on No. 10 and was incredibly tight throughout. Wins on No. 18 and No. 6 for Team International offset advantages by Team USA on No. 15 and No. 1. With the match tied through 16 holes, Team USA’s birdie on No. 8 proved to be the difference in the match.
SUNDAY – SINGLES
Dumont de Chassart closed the weekend with a head-to-head win against Wake Forest’s Michael Brennan (Leesburg, Va.), helping Team International to a decisive 15-9 edge in the singles round. Dumont de Chassart earned an early edge with a birdie on No. 1, but Brennan took the lead with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 4 and 5. Dumont de Chasssart tied the match with a par on No. 7, and regained the lead with a birdie on No. 8. He held the one-hole edge through No. 11, then posted three straight birdies on 12, 13, and 14 to go up by four. The rivals each birdies No. 15, giving Dumont de Chassart the victory, 4&3.
