ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Incoming University of Michigan ice hockey defenseman Seamus Casey was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the second round (46th overall) Friday (July 8) on day two of the NHL Draft.
Casey joins Frank Nazar III and Rutger McGroarty, who were chosen 13th and 14 overall, respectively, in the first round on Thursday, and the three will be teammates at Michigan in September.
A defenseman from the US National Team Development Program, Casey had 69 points (18 goals, 51 assists) in his two seasons in Plymouth, while adding 33 points in the USHL. This season, the Fort Myers, Fla., native was second on the team in defenseman points with 33 (10G, 23A) in 48 games and finished a +32. A 2022 Biosteel All-America selection, Casey won a silver medal this season at the U18 World Championship, tallying six points in six games. He adds that to the silver he won at the World Junior Olympics in 2020 and the gold medal from the 2021 Five Nations Tournament. Casey previously played for Compuware and Florida Alliance.
Casey is the 180th Wolverine to be selected in the NHL Draft and joins Luke Hughes and Ethan Edwards as Michigan defensemen drafted by the New Jersey Devils.
