Major League Baseball on Tuesday announced three roster replacements for the 2022 All-Star Game presented by Mastercard.
In the American League, Boston Red Sox designated J.D. Martinez has replaced the injured Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros. Martinez, who is now an All-Star for the fifth time, was the next designated hitter in line via the Player Ballot. Martinez will join his Red Sox teammates Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers in Los Angeles.
In the National League, Miami Marlins designated hitter Garrett Cooper has replaced the injured Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies, and San Francisco Giants pitcher Carlos Rodón has replaced Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Josh Hader, who is on the bereavement list. Cooper, who was the next NL designated hitter in line via the Player Ballot, earns his first All-Star selection, while Rodón, a selection of MLB, is an All-Star for the second time in his career. Cooper joins Marlins teammates Sandy Alcantara and Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the NL roster, while Rodón joins fellow Giants All-Star Joc Pederson.
With the roster additions, there are now 31 first-time All-Stars while a total of 41 of 69 All-Stars (59.4%) come from diverse backgrounds.
