Medvedev’s victory locks up the ATP’s top ranking for the rest of the hard court summer – nobody can surpass the Russian until after the 2022 US Open ends.
US Open champion Medvedev will begin his 12th week at No.1 next week, matching Boris Becker, and at Cincinnati he will tie Andy Roddick at 17th on the ATP’s all-time list for weeks at No.1, before passing him on Monday August 22.
The 26-year-old Medvedev rallied from 4-1 down in the opening set, winning 12 of the final 15 games to improve to 30-10 on the season.
Medvedev is into his fourth final of the 2022 season, after dropping title matches at the Australian Open (l. Nadal), ‘s-Hertogenbosch (l. Van Rijthoven) and Halle (l. Hurkacz).
The Russian will bid for his 14th ATP title on Saturday in Mexico, against either Felix Auger-Aliassime or Cameron Norrie.
Kecmanovic drops to 3-11 against the ATP’s top-10, and 0-3 against reigning No.1-ranked players. The 22-year-old falls to 29-16 on the season with the loss.
