England are taking on South Africa on day one of the second Test today and Ben Stokes’s side are looking to bounce back from a comprehensive defeat at Lord’s. The South African bowling attack ripped through the English batting line-up, led by the pace of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen, and England must come up with a way to stem the loss of wickets at Old Trafford this week if they are to level the three-Test series.
England make one change with Ollie Robinson coming into the bowling attack to add height and bounce, with Matthew Potts dropping out. Zak Crawley retains his place in the starting XI despite his continued struggles as opener, with Harry Brook waiting in the wings and tipped for a call-up for the third and final Test should Crawley falter once more here. South Africa make one switch, bringing in a second spinner – Simon Harmer – in place of seamer Jansen.

OUT! Rassie van der Dussen 16 (30), ct. Foakes, b. Stokes, South Africa 76-5 (23.4)
Taken by Foakes, huge appeal – and given! Another for England, but Rassie van der Dussen sends it upstairs for a check…

South Africa 75/4 (23), K Verreynne 2, R van der Dussen 16, Jack Leach 0-4 (1)
A loose start from Leach, forcing down a long-hop that Rassie van der Dussen dispatches to leg for four. The rest of the over is rather tidier, even without too much spin to concern RvdD.

South Africa 71/4 (22), Kyle Verreynne 2, R van der Dussen 12, B Stokes 1-5 (1)
Enter Kyle Verreynne, with England eyeing that long South African tail. We send our best wishes to the Verreynne family – the wicket-keeper’s grandfather is currently in hospital after falling ill while attending the First Test at Lord’s.
He’s off the mark with a flick off the hips.
Another change for England, and a first sighting at how spin will fare on this Old Trafford surface. Jack Leach into the fray.

OUT! Aiden Markram 14 (27), ct. Foakes, b. Stokes, South Africa 68-4 (21.3)
Taken this time! A mental lapse from Aiden Markram and Ben Stokes has claimed him cheaply!
It’s another short ball lacking in real venom, but Markram is haphazard on the pull regardless, skewing a horrible top edge up into the air. Markram groans as Ben Foakes settles underneath it, and England’s morning gets even better.

South Africa 66/3 (21.1), A Markram 14, R van der Dussen 11, B Stokes 0-2 (0.1)
Nearly a wicket with his first ball! A mistimed heave from Markram to an attempted bouncer from Stokes, but wide and over the fielder at forward square leg.

South Africa 66/3 (21), A Markram 12, R van der Dussen 11, S Broad 2-17 (6)
It would be lovely to see Aiden Markram belatedly come good as a Test cricketer. He looked to the manor born alongside Dean Elgar at the top of the order as he began his career after leading South Africa to victory at the 2014 U19 World Cup, and his repeated failures are a touch peculiar for a player with few obvious flaws and obvious stroke-making strength.
Temba Bavuma will return to this side when he has recovered from injury, but a big score for one of these two in these challenging conditions could really nail down a spot. It may be that the new ball is just starting to soften but they do look slightly more comfortable than the top order cohort.
Stuart Broad completes his sixth over of the spell. At the other end, another change – Ben Stokes will indeed have a burst before lunch.

South Africa 60/3 (20), A Markram 9, R van der Dussen 9, J Anderson 1-19 (8)
An asssured stroke from Rassie van der Dussen, rocking back to pounce on a slightly short and wide Anderson ball and send it tumbling to the backward point boundary. He’ll take two more after more of a force off the back foot, with Ollie Robinson putting the yards in to chase it down over this slow outfield.
Ben Stokes is loosening his shoulders at fourth slip.

South Africa 53/3 (19), A Markram 9, R van der Dussen 3, S Broad 2-11 (5)
An encouraging word for Aiden Markram from Stuart Broad, pausing at the end of his follow-through, presumably to commend the batter for a solid block. His next stroke is rather less convincing, up on to his toes and inside edging into his pads.
Broad then slithers a ball under Markram’s outside edge, batter a bit betwixt and between with the Dukes again scuttling a touch. An on-drive to bring him three will please him rather more.

South Africa 50/3 (18), A Markram 6, R van der Dussen 3, J Anderson 1-13 (7)
What has been notable this morning is how rarely South Africa have had cause to drive. England figured out the surface early, recognising the need to hit a length or just short of, and generally their lines have been immaculate. The attack copped some criticism for a slightly flat performance at times at Lord’s but this has been their sort of day, and each of Anderson, Broad and Robinson have delivered.
Rassie van der Dussen plays five dots from the former before snatching two off his hip to bring up South Africa’s fifty.

South Africa 48/3 (17), A Markram 6, R van der Dussen 1, S Broad 2-8 (4)
There’s a bit of variable bounce, too – Stuart Broad finds a dull spot outside off, ball barely lifting above knee height and causing some difficulty for Ben Foakes, who concedes two byes. It’s a trio of twos, in fact, the byes separating an offside punch and leg flick from Markram.
