IRON MOUNTAIN — The Iron Mountain girls tennis team swept the four singles matches and added wins at No. 1 and No. 4 doubles to upend West Iron County on Monday at Iron Mountain.
No. 3 singles Natalie Brown and No. 4 singles Rediet Husing won all 12 games in their matches, but the Mountaineers’ other four victories were much more difficult.
Three flights went to three sets. No. 1 singles Callie Bianco fought back to defeat Aubrey Bice 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 . In doubles, No. 1 Elle Lofholm and Anja Kleiman nipped Lillie Schmutzler and Callista Bortolameolli 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (2) and No. 4 Maddie Powell and Mallory Maracini defeated Madison Cronkright and Taylor Bett 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
At No. 2 singles, Aziza Burgoon fought off Seanna Stine 6-4, 7-5.
“West Iron always presents a challenge, and today was no different,” IM coach Marcus Celello said. “Four flights went to three sets, and I was proud of the girls for picking up three of those.”
Celello pointed to his No. 4 doubles duo and his top singles player after the victory.
“Maddie Powell and Mallory Maracini played great in picking up their first win of the season,” Celello began. “I’m proud of the way they stayed strong mentally after dropping the second set. Callie Bianco also did an excellent job staying mentally strong throughout her marathon match. When she is at the top of her game both physically and mentally, she is extremely difficult to beat.
“We always preach the importance of the mental aspect of tennis, and today was a major win for us in that regard,” the coach added.
The Wykons posted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Autumn Smith and Kaitlyn Smith defeated Avea Brown and Anika Cameron 6-2, 6-0 and No. 3 doubles Bailey Hoffart and Aubrey Richardson outlasted Hailey Greenleaf and Kilee Howe 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
