After losing the T20I series against Ireland, Afghanistan’s ability to compete was questioned by many but they once again proved why they are such a fierce team in the shortest format after their brilliant performance in the Asia Cup 2022. With two back-to-back wins, Afghanistan topped the group of death and qualified for the super fours of the Asia Cup.
Former India cricketer Nikhil Chopra believes that no one should take Afghanistan lightly. With Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman in form, the Afghans will fancy their chance to qualify for the finals of the tournament.
“The kind of mistakes that the Bangladesh or Sri Lanka team made, Afghanistan don’t commit such mistakes and I can guarantee on that. Even if you talk about the no-balls or giving extra runs, you will see that Afghanistan plays tight cricket. Even if you are a great player or a great team, you need to play your best cricket to defeat Afghanistan. You cannot take them lightly,” said Chopra while speaking on BatBricks7 presents’ Run Ki Runneeti’ on CricTracker.
Sri Lanka joins Afghanistan to qualify for the super fours of the Asia Cup
Meanwhile, after a disappointing outing against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh is now out of the 2022 Asia Cup. Sri Lanka beat them by two wickets on Thursday (September 1) and qualified for the super fours of the competition.
The team will once again challenge Afghanistan on September 3 (Saturday) and India on September 6 (Tuesday). They will play their final super four fixture on September 9 (Friday) against the winner of Pakistan versus Hong Kong.
Speaking about Bangladesh’s disappointing campaign, former cricketer Vijay Dahiya said: “It’s time to take hard decisions. If you can’t change the outcome, change the team at least. Mosaddek Hossain played well tonight and he is the vice-captain of the side at the age of 22. So, you must have thought something about it. I think it’s high time to bring a change and the supporters will want that as well in my opinion.
