DULUTH — The St. Scholastica men’s soccer team jumped out to an early lead and held off a late push from Northland College to post its first victory of the season, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Saints Field.
In the 81st match between the programs, the Saints (1-1 overall) gained momentum early, drawing six fouls in the first 28 minutes. In the 30th minute, the Saints received a goal from Keegan Chastey with an assist from Finigan Huffington.
The Saints took their lead into halftime and found themselves in control early in the second half on the Lumberjacks’ half of the field.
St. Scholastica added to its lead in the 66th minute, this time from the leg of Andres Gradilla and off an assist by Clemente Infante.
But in the 71st minute the Saints received a red card, leaving them vulnerable on the defensive side of the ball. The Lumberjacks (0-2) scored in the 89th minute with a goal by Izaak Clarke and assist from Nick Diaz, cutting the Saints’ lead to one goal. St. Scholastica was outshot 14-11 in the game, but held on for the win.
The Saints will travel to Wisconsin-Eau Claire Tuesday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
