MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Fifth-year senior defender Jordan Brewster and senior goalkeeper Kayza Massey of the No. 21-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team collected a pair of Big 12 Conference weekly honors, as announced by the league on Tuesday.
Brewster was tabbed the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, while Massey collected the Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week nod. The accolades mark the first Big 12 weekly awards for the Mountaineers this season, while Brewster earns her fifth career Big 12 weekly award and Massey collects her second career weekly conference honor.
The duo helped the Mountaineers go 1-0-1 last week, tying No. 11 Auburn, 0-0, on Sept. 1, and then earning a 1-0 win over No. 25 Samford on Sept. 4. Brewster and Massey anchored the West Virginia defense led them to a pair of shutouts against ranked foes last week. The clean sheets pushed WVU’s total to four on the year, as well as three in a row. Brewster and Massey played all 180 minutes of total action in last week’s contests.
Additionally, Brewster also scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute to lift WVU to the 1-0 victory over Samford. She took a rocket of a free kick from just over midfield that went right out of reach of the Bulldogs’ goalie for the last-minute score. The North Canton, Ohio, native’s tally was her first of the campaign and the seventh goal of her career, while the game-winning strike was the third of her career.
A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Massey ranks No. 5 nationally in shutouts (4) and No. 37 in the NCAA in save percentage (0.885). She leads the Big 12 Conference in those two categories, while she also is tied for second in the league in goals against average (0.500).
Additionally, Brewster was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for her performance at Auburn and against Samford last week. The honor is the first of her career from the publication.
The Mountaineers return home this week to host Clemson on Thursday, Sept. 8, and Bucknell on Sunday, Sept. 11. Both matches will take place at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, with Thursday’s contest kicking off at 7 p.m. ET, and Sunday’s match slated for 1 p.m.
