FORT WORTH, Texas — A trio of University of Texas Women’s Tennis players advanced to the singles main draw quarterfinals on the third day of the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Texas Regionals at the Friedman Tennis Center on the campus of TCU. Graduate Marlee Zein, junior Malaika Rapolu and sophomore Vivian Ovrootsky each earned one singles win on Saturday to move to the quarterfinals in the main draw.
Zein claimed a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Mercedes Aristegui of TCU in the Round of 16, and Ovrootsky rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) win against Baylor’s Liubov Kostenko in the Round of 16. Rapolu added a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Gloria Alogo Piqueras of North Texas.
In doubles action later on Saturday, the tandem of Zein and Ovrootsky saw their run end in the main draw Round of 16 with a hard-fought 8-7 (7-3) loss to Baylor’s pair of Liubov Kotstenko and Brooke Thompson.
Singles quarterfinals action is scheduled for Sunday at 8:30 a.m. CT, and singles semifinals will be contested at 12 p.m. CT.
