My question could have been phrased better to quarterback Justin Fields. But I thought some context was needed after hearing him rip himself for what he did in the Bears’ win against the Texans on Sunday.
Jahns: “Justin, how do you balance this game against this being your third game in this offense?”
Fields: “I’m sorry.”
Jahns: “How do you balance what happened in this game against this just being your third game in this offense?”
Fields: “Balance what exactly?”
Jahns: “Like what happened in this one, the two picks, and this being your third game actually overall in this offense?”
Fields: “I don’t think I’m like understanding your question, man?”
Jahns: “It’s only your third game with Luke Getsy calling plays, Matt Eberflus as your head coach. Having that patience while you’re trying to learn and have all these mistakes, like how do you balance what happened in this game versus the overall picture of the season?”
Whew. OK, that’s on me. (I think I had to get that off my chest).
But as Fields described his own outing as “terrible” and as “trash,” establishing that Fields has played only three games in this offense felt essential to any analysis. He’s also playing for a first-time play caller in Getsy and a first-time head coach in Eberflus. There’s a lot of learning on the job right now, and yet, the Bears are 2-1.
This is where this week’s five takeaways column begins.
