American Danielle Collins scored the first upset on opening day of main draw action at the WTA San Diego Open with a straight sets win over seventh seed Caroline Garcia, of France, on Monday evening.
Collins, ranked No 19 in the world and the 2022 Australian Open runner-up in January, was dominant for most of the one-hour 30-minute encounter at the Barnes Tennis Centre on Tuesday night.
After winning the first set 6-2, the hard-hitting American led 2-0, 4-2, and 5-4 in the second set before Garcia fought back each time. Collins was able to take the second set in a tiebreaker and close out the win 6-2, 7-6.
Danille Collins is now 2-0 lifetime against Garcia
Collins will next play world No 31 Martina Trevisan, who defeated qualifier Camila Osorio 6-3, 6-4 in another first round match.
For Garcia, this was her third consecutive loss on the tour after her summer run which saw her win titles in Warsaw and Cincinnati and reach the semi-finals at the US Open to move back in to the top 10. With the loss, she also goes 0-2 lifetime against Collins.
