MINNEAPOLIS — Lauren Rutten and Elizabeth Digiovanni each finished 2-0 as the Staples-Motley Cardinals dropped both their matches by the score of 5-2 in the Class 1A Team State Tournament at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center Tuesday, Oct. 25.
The eighth-ranked Cardinals lost to the fourth-ranked Litchfield Dragons in the quarterfinals. Rutten pulled out a three-set victory at No. 1 singles while Digiovanni captured a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles.
The Cardinals moved to the Consolation Semifinals where they fell 5-2 to the fifth-ranked St. James Saints.
Rutten cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory while Digiovanni won her match 6-4, 7-6 as the Cardinals ended their season with a 14-6 record.
Rutten and Ronnie Noska will play in the Class 1A singles state tournament starting Thursday, Oct. 27.
