San Diego – Texas Men’s Tennis junior Eliot Spizzirri advanced to the finals of the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego on Saturday.
The fourth-seeded No. 35 Spizzirri defeated top-seeded No. 28 Garrett Johns of Duke, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. After sweeping the opening set, Spizzirri trailed 2-0 in the second after a break in the opening game. He got that break back to even it at 2-2, but Johns broke right back to regain the lead, which he maintained to send it to a third set. That frame stayed on serve up to a 4-3 lead for Spizzirri when he secured the break he needed for 5-3 and served out from there.
It was the second time Spizzirri downed Johns this fall after the two previously met in the quarterfinals of the ITA All-American Championships on Oct. 7, a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 decision.
Spizzirri will now face 3 seed Nishesh Basavareddy of Stanford, who is ranked by the ITA as the No. 2 freshman/newcomer coming into the year. That match will start not before 12 p.m. PT/2 p.m. CT.
Spizzirri becomes the first Longhorn to reach the final of the National Fall Championships since 2019 when Yuya Ito claimed the tournament title.
