EDMONTON, AB – Oilers prospect and Seattle Thunderbirds left-winger Reid Schaefer has been named to Team Canada’s World Junior selection camp to be held in Moncton from Dec. 9-12.
The Spruce Grove product was one of 16 forwards and 29 total players invited to compete for a World Junior roster spot with Team Canada ahead of the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championship in Halifax and Moncton.
In 21 games for the Thunderbirds this WHL season after being selected in the first round, 32nd-overall by the Oilers at the 2022 NHL Draft, Schaefer has registered 25 goals and 11 assists while averaging 4.4 shots per game.
Selection camp includes practices and a pair of games against the U SPORTS all-stars before Canada’s final roster for the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship is named on Dec. 12. After a five-day training camp at the Garcelon Civic Centre in St. Stephen, NB from Dec. 14-18, Canada faces Switzerland, Slovakia and Finland in pre-tournament action before opening its tournament on Boxing Day against Czechia.
