Tuesday night was a night of threes.
On a night in which he scored he scored three goals, Alexander Ovechkin became the third player in NHL history to get to 800 career goals, joining Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe in the beyond-exclusive 800 Club.
Against the Chicago Blackhawks, Ovechkin was dominant in what would end up being a 7-3 victory, topping off his three goals with an assist. Even on the road, the celebration for No. 800 was triumphant.
It was just one of those nights, as the broadcast called No. 800 after Ovechkin’s second of the night.

MORE: How close Alex Ovechkin is to breaking Wayne Gretzky’s career goal record
It’s Ovechkin’s 29th career hat trick, moving him ahead of Marcel Dionne for sixth all-time. Phil Esposito is next on the list with 32. Ovechkin, 37, is now just one goal back of Howe for second-most all-time behind Gretzky’s 894.
Rank | Player | Years | Games |
---|---|---|---|
1. | Wayne Gretzky | 1979-99 | 894 |
2. | Gordie Howe | 1946-80 | 801 |
3. | Alex Ovechkin | 2005-23 | 800 |
Ovi’s historic accomplishment also marks his 20th of the 2022-23 campaign, which extends his streak of 18 consecutive seasons with at least 20 goals.
From a historical perspective, it took Wayne Gretzky 231 games to go from 700 to 800 goals while Howe did it in 256.
Ovechkin? He did it in just 162 games.
Insanely, the 894 number isn’t completely out of the question, even if it will take some incredible longevity from Ovechkin to get there. He already holds the record for goals with one team, and he’s just a year removed from scoring 50 goals in 2021. It isn’t unthinkable that he could break one of The Great One’s records.
“I don’t try to concentrate on the numbers, but obviously we’re getting closer, and, of course, there is going to be more talk, more attention to it,” Ovechkin had said of No. 800 last week, per NHL.com. “But to be in this company is going to be a pretty special moment for me, for my family, for all the team.”
“This … it’s huge. It’s huge for hockey, it’s huge for the organization,” Ovechkin said in the locker room following the win, per ESPN. “And to do it with you guys, it’s special.”
