Manchester United look to continue rolling in Premier League play as the Red Devils visit Crystal Palace in a midweek battle at Selhurst Park.
After a rocky start, Erik ten Hag has finally begun to steer the ship towards heights fans have craved for years, with United sitting fourth in the table and trending upwards. They beat rivals Manchester City 2-1 last time out and will go above the reigning champions into second if they claim a 10th consecutive win in all competitions.
The charge has been led by in-form forward Marcus Rashford. The England star has scored in four straight Premier League matches and in each of his past seven appearances across all competitions since the World Cup.
Crystal Palace require a turnaround to keep them from slipping into the relegation battle, currently sitting 12th but teetering seven points above the drop zone. The Eagles have lost four of their previous five Premier League matches and six of their past seven across all competitions.
The Sporting News will be following the match live and providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Crystal Palace vs Man United: First half
26th min: The game is beginning to slow a bit now. Chris Richards makes a needed intervention on a through-ball meant for Wout Weghorst. Antony gets in a scuffle on the touchline with Palace full-back Tyrick Mitchell, which the referee sorts out.
20th min: Play continues now with Martinez off the field, he looks to be ok but will need a new shirt to account for all the blood. May need some patching up too.
Things have gotten a bit chaotic, as Man United nearly put themselves in danger with a poor back-pass, and then immediately go Route One down the other end and come close to springing Antony on the run.
17th min: Play is stopped as birthday boy Lisandro Martinez receives medical treatment for a head injury. There’s some blood so this may be a bit. He took a thump on an aerial duel with Jean-Philippe Mateta, maybe a bit of an elbow. Certainly not enough for disciplinary action.
16th min: Chance, Man United! A long spell of attacking possession ends in a Luke Shaw volleyed effort that doesn’t miss by much! It beats the goalkeeper but also beats the post, fired just wide right across the face of goal. Great whipped effort that had good pace.
That would have been a Goal of the Season contender from Luke Shaw if that effort had found the net. It was not too far wide. He’s taken up some smart positions in these opening 17 minutes.#MUFC

11th min: Chance, Man United! Marcus Rashford is clean through, but he flubs the chance and clips it right to Vincent Guaita! The flag went up anyways, saving Rashford further embarrassment, but it’s still not a whiff you’d expect from a player in his kind of form.
9th min: The most dangerous Man United moment so far came from a great one-two move between Luke Shaw and Wout Weghorst to spring Bruno Fernandes down the left. The Portuguese international delivered a delicious outside-of-the-boot curler to Antony in front of goal, but it’s just too close to the goalkeeper Vincent Guaita who collects, awkwardly but effectively.
7th min: Palace with another dangerous moment, building forward through the middle and then filtering out wide left to Wilfried Zaha, whose vicious volleyed cross fizzles across the penalty area untouched.
Formations are so often difficult to truly parse out, but Marcus Rashford does seem to be playing as a strike partner for Wout Weghorst. It’s fluid, but Rashford seems to have lots of freedom, while Bruno Fernandes is playing off him either out wide or tucked in behind.
United in more of a 4-4-2 tonight, with Rashford next to Weghorst up top.

4th min: A warning sign for Man United as Crystal Palace get some space in the attack. Odsonne Edouard has a moment to shoot at the top of the penalty area, but the ball gets stuck at his feet. Something United will want to keep in mind, as there was an opening for a moment of danger had Palace capitalised.
2nd min: Manchester United straight into the attack, and Chris Richards is immediately involved with a headed clearance. Will Hughes makes a couple of good early interventions. There are a couple of Palace players who could springboard forward with an impressive performance today.
Kickoff: The match is under way from Selhurst Park! Full debuts on both sides, one for Chris Richards of the hosts and one for Wout Weghorst of the visitors. The two will likely be battling for much of the match, it will be a fascinating contest in the penalty area!
A win for Manchester United today would see them draw within six points of Arsenal ahead of their meeting over the weekend. That would place them firmly in the title race.

Crystal Palace vs Man United: Pre-match news, analysis, and commentary
10 mins to kick: It’s a birthday start for Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez, happy birthday to the World Cup winner, who turns 25 today!

18 mins to kick: Wout Weghorst has plenty of doubters in the Premier League after his move to Manchester United. His time at Burnley was ugly, scoring just two goals on 5.2 xG. He has a chance to silence that noise quickly here against Crystal Palace and make a case for his inclusion against Arsenal in a few days.

25 mins to kick: Erik ten Hag was also asked about deploying Casemiro in this match, knowing that if he’s booked it would trigger a yellow card suspension for the huge game against Arsenal over the weekend. The Manchester United boss seems to be operating under the strategy that three points now is better than a possible three points then, which is a fair approach.
Ten Hag did see Fred, who is also on a yellow card, to the bench for this one, so he’s not risked both at once.
Ten Hag on Casemiro missing #AFC game if he is booked tonight: “We are aware of that but it is about today, Sunday is Sunday. Obviously we don’t want him to get booked, that is clear, but it is about winning tonight.” #MUFC
— Shamoon Hafez (@ShamoonHafez) January 18, 2023
40 mins to kick: Wout Weghorst’s first Man United start is the talking point ahead of this match, and the Red Devils media have asked Erik ten Hag how he plans to utilise his new frontman in this game. He’s not having it.
Ten Hag asked if #MUFC will now put more crosses into the box: “I don’t thin Weghorst is a player only for crosses.”

60 mins to kick: It’s a debut on both sides, as we’ve been discussion, as lineups are confirmed. Wout Weghorst makes his first Manchester United start up front for the Red Devils, while Chris Richards earns his first Premier League start for the club he joined this past summer.
Wout do you think to tonight’s line-up then, Reds? 👀#MUFC || #CRYMUN pic.twitter.com/3JIcB4MhFg

67 mins to kick: No official lineup news out yet, but reports filtering in from Manchester United journalists seem to suggest that Anthony Martial will not take part and Wout Weghorst will indeed get his first start for the club.
No Anthony Martial with the #mufc squad arriving at Selhurst Park. Suggestion is Wout Weghorst starts for United

80 mins to kick: New Manchester United striker Wout Weghorst could potentially make his debut for the Red Devils today, but it does seem like it might be a bit early for that. Head coach Erik ten Hag was coy on that possibility in his pre-match press conference, simply saying he wanted to “prepare the team in the right way” for the match. The other options are continuing to deploy an out of form Anthony Martial up front, or moving Marcus Rashford to central striker.
🗣 “We can prepare the team in the right way.”
Would you like to see Weghorst from the start tonight?#MUFC | #ManUtd pic.twitter.com/mjJUuUx8ko

105 mins to kick: U.S. fans will be watching intently as lineups are announced. Crystal Palace is preparing for three weeks without centre-back Joachim Andersen, and Chris Richards could be in contention to replace him at the back. James Tomkins could also be deployed in that spot.
Richards has struggled with injuries since joining Palace in the summer, which have prevented him from earning a place in the squad. Taking on an in-form Manchester United would be quite the way to make your first Premier League start!
The Athletic (@MattWoosie) reporting that Joachim Andersen will miss the remainder of the month due to the calf injury that forced him off at Chelsea. The centre-back could be sidelined for around three weeks with James Tomkins or Chris Richards his likely replacement. #CPFC

120 mins to kick: Ahead of the Premier League clash, Erik ten Hag was asked if he could manage any player either past or present, and he selected his countrymate Johan Cruyff. Aside from Pele, the Dutch legend may have been the single most influential player on the modern game, both as a player and a manager. How many individuals throughout history can say they both have a skill named after them and invented an entirely new tactical concept? Cruyff was an all-time great.
Imagine this Manchester United side with Cruyff as field general! An excellent choice Erik.
🫵 You asked Erik if he could manage one player in football, past or present, who would it be…
And he’s made a very strong choice 👏🇳🇱#MUFC

Crystal Palace vs Man United lineups & team news
Defender Joachim Andersen had to be replaced for Palace against Chelsea and is a doubt with a calf problem, possibly out as long as three weeks. His replacement is Chris Richards, who makes his first Premier League start, beating out James Tomkins for the spot start.
Starting in midfield is Will Hughes, who hasn’t played a full 90 minutes since early November. He replaces Eberechi Eze, while Odsonne Edouard earns a rare start in place of regular striker Jordan Ayew.
Midfielder James McArthur remains out with a groin issue and defender Nathan Ferguson has been training individually as he returns to full fitness.
Crystal Palace confirmed starting lineup (4-3-3): Guaita (GK) — Clyne, Richards, Guehi, Mitchell — Hughes, Doucoure — Olise, Mateta, Zaha — Edouard.
Crystal Palace subs (9): Johnstone (GK), Ward, Tomkins, Milivojevic, Schlupp, Riedewald, Eze, Ozoh, Ayew.
Our starting XI for tonight 👊

Full-back Diogo Dalot (thigh) was forced off during United’s 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Charlton Athletic on December 10 and missed the 2-1 comeback victory over Manchester City in the Premier League last Saturday. He sits again here in favor of the healthy Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Donny van de Beek could sit out the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, while long-term absentees Axel Tuanzebe and Jadon Sancho are also out again. Wout Weghorst gets his first start up front for the club, in place of the absent Anthony Martial, but fellow loanee Jack Butland can’t play against his parent club.
Marcus Rashford also a knock in the Manchester derby, but passes a fitness test to start opposite Antony on the wing, with young Alejandro Garnacho benched despite rumors of a long-term deal agreed. Ten Hag has opted against resting Casemiro, who would be banned for the game at Arsenal if they were booked against Palace, as would his fellow midfielder Fred who does not make the Starting XI.
Man United confirmed starting lineup (4-2-3-1): De Gea (GK) — Wan-Bissaka, Varane, L. Martinez, Shaw — Eriksen, Fred — Garnacho, Fernandes, Antony — Rashford.
Man United subs (9): Heaton (GK), Lindelof, Maguire, Malacia, McTominay, Fred, Pellistri, Elanga, Garnacho.

Odds via BetMGM (USA), Sports Interaction (Canada), SkyBet (UK), and Neds (Australia).
United are odds-on favourites to win three consecutive away league games for the first time in more than two years, with Palace long odds to end their three-match losing home run in all competitions by winning at Selhurst Park for the first time since October 29.
Palace beat United 1-0 at home last season as part of a sequence of three wins in the past six editions of this game in the Premier League, while Wilfried Zaha can become the former United player with the outright most goals against them if he scores in this fixture for a fourth time for the hosts.
Marcus Rashford is also seeking to become the first United player to find the net in eight consecutive appearances since Ruud van Nistelrooy in May 2003.
Prediction: 1-1
