Asheville, N.C.- The University of North Carolina Asheville women’s tennis team defeated the Longwood women’s tennis team 6-1. The victory saw the Bulldogs reach 6-0 for the first time since 2015, and the match marked the first Big South opponent either side has faced in 2022.
Doubles
The No.1 doubles pairing of Rosie Dickson and Ami Grace Dougah defeated Longwood’s(0-5) Karina Rizvanova and Emma Nurgazieva 6-3. The No.2 and No.3 doubles matches saw both matches finishing 6-1 in favor of UNC Asheville(6-0). Linge Steenkamp and Ari Siegal defeated Wiktoria Czerny and Maria Saez in the two slot, while Taylor Lova and Lize Alet Morkel took down Nina Hederich and Zoe Barton in the third doubles match.
Singles
In singles, four matches were decided in straight sets. Morkel defeated Nurgazieva in the No.1 singles match 6-3, 6-3. The No.2 and No.3 singles had similar results when Dougah and Steenkamp defeated Rizvanova and Saez, respectively. Czerny clinched the lone point for the Lancers in the No.4 singles when she defeated Taylor Love in a heated tiebreaker, 6-7, 7-6, 10-5. Beatrice Faureng defeated Nina Hederich in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 in the No.5 singles. Kendall Byers took down Alexandra Hincu in a tiebreaker, 6-0, 4-6, 10-8, in the final match.
“The girls got off to a bit of a slow start today but everyone really did their best to fight hard in singles matches and to make changes as needed,” said director of tennis Adam Jackson. “They gave it everything they had and I am proud of them.”
