Over the course of a century, the sands and shores of Daytona Beach, Florida have become known all the world over as one of the greatest international centers of speed. From land speed record tries and races on the beach, the Daytona International Speedway is now a place that makes a legend of any racer that rolls into Victory Lane: Especially in its signature race.
Sunday marks the 64th annual Daytona 500, the first and most prestigious race in the NASCAR Cup Series. While Daytona always marks the start of a new season, the Daytona 500 itself represents a season all its own, with the right to hoist the Harley J. Earl Trophy and be called Daytona 500 champion waiting for its winner.
Last year, Michael McDowell’s career changed when he earned his first Cup win in the Daytona 500. This year, he joins fellow Daytona 500 champions lDenny Hamlin, Joey Logano, and Kurt Busch, NASCAR stars who have never won the Daytona 500 — like Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski, and Martin Truex Jr. — and many of the sport’s brightest stars like Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, and Ryan Blaney in pursuing Daytona glory.
