TROY, N.Y. – The Liberty League has announced its weekly award recipients and two Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athletes are among the honorees. Junior Alex Mednikova has been chosen as the Singles Performer of the Week and named to the Doubles Team of the Week, along with freshman Lorna Flores Gonzalez.
In two dual matches on the road over the weekend, Mednikova (Belle Mead, NJ / Montgomery) was 2-0 while playing No. 1 singles. She defeated her foe from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) 6-0, 6-1 on Friday in a match that RPI won 9-0. The next morning at the University of Rochester, she posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over the No. 1 singles player for the Yellowjackets, who is a senior. The Engineers won the match 6-3.
In doubles, Mednikova and Flores Gonzalez (Sugar Land, TX / iUniversity Prep.) went 2-0 while playing No. 1. They swept their match against RIT 8-0 and then had an 8-4 win at Rochester.
This weekend was the first time Mednikova and Flores Gonzalez have paired up for doubles. In four dual matches during the fall semester, they played with Rani Jones (New Market, MD / Oakdale) and Krisia Flores Gonzalez (Sugar Land, TX / William P. Clements), respectively.
Rensselaer, which is coached by Justin Roe, is 5-1 in 2021-22. The Engineers return to action this weekend when they travel to Wellesley College and Babson College.
