The high school boys golf season begins Saturday, Feb. 26
Here are updates on teams, players, events, plus key dates during the season.
Season starts: Feb. 26
Overview: Several Orange County teams and individuals appear headed toward strong seasons. Defending CIF-SCGA champion Servite, Sunny Hills and Tesoro can make cases for being No. 1 in the county.
The Lancers feature Cal-committed junior Eric Lee, the No. 1-ranked player in California by the American Junior Golf Association, along with college commits Patrick Hong (Washington) and Carson Kim (USC).
Servite, coming off its first CIF-SCGA title in June, returns experienced seniors Jack Cantlay (Long Beach State) and Chip Deegan (Navy). Cantlay is the youngest brother of former Servite star Patrick Cantlay, now ranked third in the world.
And there’s Tesoro. The reigning CIF Division 2 champion returns most of its top players, including junior Dylan Block and college commits Ryan Voois (Illinois) and Chase Goetschel (UC Santa Barbara). The Titans also added Block’s freshman brother Ethan.
The Titans are among the teams headed to the Servite Invitational at Western Hills Golf Course on Monday that will help preview the season.
Anaheim Discovery Christian, third in CIF-SCGA last year, returns reigning SoCal champion and county player of the year Youseong Choi, a junior, and senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (San Diego State).
Other strong teams to watch are: Huntington Beach, Edison, Corona del Mar, Dana Hills, Santa Margarita, Mater Dei, JSerra and Crean Lutheran.
The county’s group of top individuals to watch also includes: Corona del Mar senior Calder Overfelt (Santa Clara), Aliso Niguel senior Kyle An (UCLA), Cypress senior Daniel Heo (Cal), Santa Margarita sophomore Aaron Huang, Edison senior Timothy Jung (Pacific), Huntington Beach senior Edwin Lam and Dana Hills freshman Nick Davis.
Overfelt and An are ranked fifth and sixth in the state by the American Junior Golf Association.
