NORMAN — The No. 20 Oklahoma men’s tennis team defeated the No. 18 Texas A&M Aggies in a 7-0 fashion at the Headington Family Tennis Center Friday night.
OU (11-1) earned its second top-25 win on the season, fifth sweep and remains undefeated at home following Friday night’s victory.
The Sooners kicked things off claiming the doubles point over the Aggies with victories on courts one and two. Alex Martinez and Welsh Hotard rolled through their match at the top spot against Stefan Storch and Noah Schachter. Baptiste Anselmo and Mark Mandlik clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 win on court two against Pierce Rollins and Matthis Ross.
When play was halted, Mason Beiler and Nathan Han were up 6-5 against Giulio Perego and Raphael Perot on court three.
“The doubles point, as always, is one of our biggest points,” head coach Nick Crowell said. “Welsh [Hotard] and Alex [Martinez] did an unbelievable job getting off the court quick, 6-1, against a good team. Then Mark [Mandlik] and Baptiste [Anselmo] got down a break early, broke back, got another break, got down 4-1. We’ve been talking about having a lot of resilience in these matches and what it takes to win, and they did a great job tonight putting it out in a tight win there.”
Justin Schlageter continued the Sooners’ momentum, notching the first singles win on the night. The junior defeated Storch 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot. Hotard struck next for OU with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Giulio Perego on court six.
Martinez clinched the match for the Sooners in a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 fashion over No. 50 Perot at the No. 2 spot. Martinez’s win was his third ranked win on the season.
Play continued with OU picking up three more singles wins. No. 29 Beiler finished next for Oklahoma, defeating Schachter 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 [3] at the top line. On court five, No. 88 Mandlik tallied the win over Ross 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2 to put the Sooners up 6-0. No. 70 Jordan Hasson closed out the night for OU with a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory on court three.
“Everybody came to play tonight,” Crowell said. “It was a tug-of-war match and they never let go of the rope.”
