Giannis Antetokounmpo is known for being incredibly tough, gritty, and for having an iron-clad mentality.
He is the player in the NBA that currently best embodies “mamba-mentality”, with his unrelenting commitment to craft and commitment to success.
The Milwaukee Bucks’ championship run last season cemented Giannis’ status in the league, and the most recent revelation from the man himself can only further increase his persona.
Sam Amick of The Athletic recently sat down with Giannis for an exclusive where they discussed the Bucks’ title run during the 2020-2021 NBA season.
Amidst discussion of the Bucks’ success, comradery, and Giannis’ MVP odds in 2022, Giannis revealed a shocking truth regarding his injury that occurred during Game 4 of the ECF against the Atlanta Hawks.
“What basically happened is that if my leg had hyperextended one more time, I was done.”
“There’s nothing to cut that was in there. It was torn already. It was out – (the piece that) protected me from an MCL or ACL (tear). There’s a thing (in your leg) that protects you when you hyperextend (your knee) that doesn’t let you go all the way back. So that thing was torn.”
The severity of Giannis’ injury became an afterthought after the superstar made a unbelievably quick recovery to return in time for the NBA Finals against the Phoenix Suns. However, with this information it seems very likely that Giannis risked the longevity of his career to return to the court in time to help his team pursue a championship.
If true, this information highlights Giannis’ commitment to his teammates and winning. A commitment that only further endears Giannis to NBA fans everywhere.
Even if you are not a Bucks fan, this reality deserves a ton of respect. Giannis’ toughness cannot be questioned ever again.
A truly remarkable talent on the court, Giannis Antetokounmpo continues to amaze fans everywhere for his mental fortitude. It is a skill that many athletes struggle with, and it is a skill that will propel Giannis to even more success in the future. Enjoy this legendary talent every step along the way, it’ll be well worth it.
