Somebody, please make this happen
With 15 minutes until the deadline, there’s still time for a contender to add the legendary Phil Kessel.
Sure, he’s not very good this year, but he’s a proven playoff performer. No really!
He was great in Pittsburgh, and they probably don’t win a Cup without him. He doesn’t score much anymore and never played defense, but he can still skate and serve as a playmaker. Plus he’s Phil Kessel.

Johan Larsson trade analysis
I had Johan Larsson at No. 20 on my trade board, ahead of a lot of other bottom-six NHL forwards, because he projects as a the sort of easy-to-integrate, low-maintenance forward that can subtly help a team at the trade deadline. Sort of Calle Jarnkrok-light.
Larsson hasn’t played since sports hernia surgery in February, but is said to be ready to go now. He’ll help solidify Washington’s bottom six. Still don’t love the Capitals’ goaltending at the moment, but they are for sure deeper up front after today.

Report: Sens send Zach Sanford to the Jets
This might be the funniest deal of the deadline so far. Sure, Zach Sanford will fix the Jets. If Winnipeg winds up spending its day adding bottom-six pieces and not trading Andrew Copp or Paul Stastny, I’m going to do a victory lap.

Some interesting no-shows (so far)
The Hurricanes: Arguably the best team in the East, they haven’t done a thing leading up to the deadline, and in fact haven’t made a trade since the offseason. They’re already good, but so are the Lightning, Panthers and (maybe) Leafs, and those teams all went out and made big moves.
The Islanders: They’re bad and should be rebuilding. They didn’t have a ton to offer, but you’d expect a deal or two for futures. Not yet, although Lou Lamoriello has been around the block a time or two.
The Golden Knights: We know they’re capped out, but with the season spiralling and a potential hole in net, you wondered if they’d find a way to push a few more chips into the middle. So far, they’re quiet.

Prospect potential: Barron has bright future with Habs
I love the Habs’ haul for Artturi Lehkonen. Justin Barron is a legitimate potential No. 3-5D who was my third-ranked Avalanche prospect.
He’s beloved in the hockey world for his play at both ends and the way he carries himself, the health concerns are well-documented but also in the rearview mirror, and the two second-round picks have real value.
There’s a good chance that turns into an important move for this next chapter in Montreal.

Theoretically, Rakell for DeBrusk makes sense
In theory, Rickard Rakell to Boston for Jake DeBrusk just makes so much sense. Anaheim GM Pat Verbeek is on record as saying he wants players with term. As of this morning, DeBrusk now has cost certainty.
Rakell would be a nice fit on that top Bruins’ line, once Patrice Bergeron returns, and would allow them to keep David Pastrnak and Taylor Hall playing together. Rakell is a complementary piece. He won’t drive a line. But he’s fully capable of completing a line.

News from the waiver wire
A couple interesting waiver moves:
- Arizona claimed goaltender Harri Sateri, who had to clear before joining the Maple Leafs. Whoops. If Toronto wants to add a goalie, they;re going to have to look elsewhere. On the other hand, Petr Mrazek cleared. I’m not sure what’d be funnier: the Leafs immediately having to call him back up, or someone picking him up out of spite.
- Vancouver claimed Brad Richardson, who’d been waived by the Flames. Calgary could try to replace him, but it makes just as much sense to figure out who among their current group of forwards makes the most sense in that spot. Richardson joining the Canucks is bizarre, though. Jim Rutherford has been suspiciously quiet today.

Report: Ducks shopping Rickard Rakell
Emily Kaplan says that the Ducks are “shopping offers” on Rickard Rakell, and as a guy who also often left my homework to the last minute, I respect it.
This is a little late in the process to get something done, but some players are prime targets and others end up being fallback plans, and if Rakell was that guy for enough teams this year we could still get a late bidding war.
Pat Verbeek’s had a pretty solid first deadline without a ton of time to prep for it, so let’s see what he can do with one of the few big names still out there.

An end of an era in Boston
So the Zach Senyshyn era is over in Boston? Interesting, not because of the haul Boston received (Josh Brown) plus a conditional seventh-round pick, but because Senyshyn was drafted one place ahead of Jake DeBrusk in the Bruins’ disastrous 2015 entry draft. Long-time Boston fans don’t need reminding, but the rest of the hockey world may not remember all the deals.
With three consecutive picks (14, 15 and 16), the Bruins took Jakub Zboril, DeBrusk and Senyshyn. The next three players off the board were Mathew Barzal, Kyle Connor and Thomas Chabot. The Bruins wouldn’t be shopping for center-ice help if they’d drafted Barzal, of course. At some point, teams have to move on – which is what trading Senyshyn accomplishes. Maybe DeBrusk, who signed a contract extension this morning, is next out the door.
