Formula 1 – Australian Grand Prix
Sunday, April 10th – 1:00 a.m. EST – ESPN
It may be one of the more difficult-to-follow races of the season for American viewers, but the Australian GP at Albert Park is often worth it. This race is back after a two-year COVID hiatus, so local fans have been longing for F1 racing for quite some time.
An eventful, incident-filled qualifying session saw Nicholas Latifi, Fernando Alonso, and both Aston Martins see their share of problems. Charles Leclerc came out on pole again, and he will once again share a front row with Max Verstappen. Sergio Perez starts third, while Lando Norris and Lewis Hamilton surprise in a struggling McLaren and Mercedes, respectively, in fourth and fifth.
NASCAR – Martinsville Speedway
Saturday, April 9th – 7:30 p.m. EST – Fox Sports 1
Stock car racing heads to its most traditional short track, the flat half-mile at Martinsville, for the second leg of a very unique-three part short track swing. Last weekend, the Next Gen car and some very high-wear tires produced a memorable four-car race for the win at the end of a long green flag run. Next weekend, NASCAR heads back to a dirt-covered Bristol for just the second time in this half-century. In between, a race on a high-contact track known for creating its own dramas.
IMSA – Long Beach
Saturday, April 9th – 5:00 p.m. EST – USA
IMSA’s sprint season starts with their half of the Long Beach Grand Prix, the first-ever street circuit race for the organizer’s new GT3-based GTD Pro class. GTD and DPi are also here while the LMP2 and LMP3 classes are not, making this one of the best grids for spectators of the year. In the GT classes, the new BMW M4 GT3s that had struggled to open the year have shown surprising speed and may have a real shot to bounce back against the fields mostly made up of well-proven GT3 racers.
IndyCar – Long Beach
Sunday, April 10th – 3:00 p.m. EST – NBC
Through two races, Scott McLaughlin has been the unquestioned star of the 2022 IndyCar Series. After never contending for a win as a rookie, McLaughlin has now won a race in dominant fashion and lost another only after getting caught and passed in traffic by his teammate off the final corner of the final lap. Suddenly, the second-year Penske driver has the eyes and expectations of the series firmly on him at America’s signature street race. If he’s a contender, a podium here puts him in excellent position for the rest of the season.
