In a crucial game for both sides, Arsenal came out on top of an action packed match in North London. Both sides made changes to their defence, and it showed, with neither side looking comfortable at the back early on. Arsenal took the lead after just a couple of minutes, Nuno Tavares finishing after De Gea couldn’t hold on to Bukayo Saka’s shot, but Rangnick’s team responded well.
The first half was scrappy, with neither side really able to stamp their authority on the game. Cedric, in particular, had nervy moments, while Aaron Ramsdale and Gabriel also struggled slightly. Nevertheless, Arsenal doubled their lead. Saka was at the heart of it again, his 1-2 with Odegaard seeing Arsenal win a penalty while an Nketiah goal was disallowed.
As he did at Stamford Bridge, Saka took the spot kick. He went in the opposite direction to De Gea, and doubled Arsenal’s lead. It felt symbolic of his growing responsibility in the side. However, United soon halved their deficit. Ronaldo did well to get on the end of a Matic cross at the far post, finding room between Gabriel and Nuno Tavares.
The Portuguese left back experienced a chaotic game of both highs and lows and, when United continued to apply pressure in the second half, it was Tavares who gave away a penalty after Matic headed the ball against his raised arm.

Bruno Fernandes, who had a game to forget, waited to send Ramsdale the wrong way, but then passed the ball wide of the open half of the goal, grazing the post with it. The second half had been more subdued in comparison, but it erupted as the midfielder failed to convert the spot kick. United continued to search for an equaliser, but the final goal went Arsenal’s way.
Bruno Fernandes failed to control on the edge of his own area, allowing Elneny to feed the ball into Xhaka, who smashed the ball home from distance. Arsenal saw out the final twenty minutes without too many concerns, keeping the ball well and frustrating United. The return of Tomiyasu in the latter stages will have been a welcome sight.
Bukayo Saka went down injured with fifteen minutes left, and came off for Rob Holding. Gunners fans will be hoping that isn’t a significant problem. If this week is anything to go by, Saka will be key to Arsenal finishing in the top four. It still looks a real possibility for Arsenal. For Manchester United, a lot of things will have to go in their favour if they’re to be playing Champions League football next season.

92nd min: Cristiano Ronaldo picks up a booking. He goes in late after Takehiro Tomiyasu, who looks like he hasn’t missed a day, fools him with a change of pace.
91st min: A bonus for Arsenal to finish the game, Takehiro Tomiyasu is coming on to make his return from his three month layoff. Cedric makes way.
88th min: Arsenal have done very well at closing the game down. They’re keeping the ball well and getting men behind the ball when they have to.
84th min: Bruno Fernandes, who has had a game to forget, is off for Juan Mata.
82nd min: The game has lost its tempo in the last few minutes. Arsenal are clearly happy to let things drift to a close, but United are struggling to inject their own pace into the game. McTominay tries to find a Ronaldo run in behind from deep, but the ball runs through to Ramsdale, and the forward was offside. Lindelof is booked for a challenge on Nketiah.
79th min: Elneny is the latest player to pick up a booking. He wins the ball before McTominay, but his follow through sees the Egyptian’s studs land on the Scot’s foot.
77th min: Bruno Fernandes’, whose loose control let Elneny recover the ball for Arsenal’s third, is booked for a late challenge on Nuno Tavares, after the Arsenal man had played the ball. VAR has a look at it, Fernandes’ foot was low, but his studs made contact with Tavares’ ankle. Nothing is given, and Rangnick makes two changes. Rashford and Lingard on for Matic and Elanga.

74th min: Rob Holding was getting ready to come on for Eddie Nketiah, but Bukayo Saka is down, and signalling for a substitution. He’s taken a few knocks in this game. Holding comes on for him, and Arsenal move to a back five. Saka is able to walk off, and gets a good reception as he leaves the pitch on the far side, and walks round the pitch to return to the dugout.

70th min: GOAL!
Arsenal have scored again, and it’s a screamer from Granit Xhaka! Arsenal counter with Nuno Tavares carrying down the left. It’s worked out to Saka on the right. He tries to play in Cedric, but it’s intercepted. Arsenal want a handball, but nothing is given as Arsenal regain possession on the edge of the area. Elneny passes sideways to Xhaka, who has time to unleash an absolute howitzer of a shot into the back of the net.

69th min: Tavares picks up a booking after pulling an opponent’s shirt. He seems to be involved in everything at the moment and, given the second half is mostly going United’s way, that’s not great news for the left back.

65th min: Tavares and Elanga tangle as the United man looks to break into the area. Nothing is given and, as it happened outside the area, VAR can’t get involved. Tavares’ touch is loose moments later, and United counter. It comes to nothing as McTominay looks to combine in the Arsenal area. There’s a few moments of wrestling as McTominay and Gabriel end up on top of Cedric, but play continues.

United break. It finds Ronaldo, right of centre, edge of the area. They have a man over, and Dalot is played in on the right. He shoots first time, near post. Ramsdale gets a strong hand to it, and pushes it onto the post. You would have gotten good odds on Dalot to hit the post and the bar before the game started.

59th min: The second half had been slower than the first, with both teams looking a little more circumspect, but the celebrations after that penalty have injected some life into the atmosphere. It’s a spell of United pressure. Cristiano fires a past Ramsdale with an acrobatic finish, after Fernandes flicks on a Lindelof pass, but it’s flagged offside. VAR checks.

55th min: United have a penalty! They have a corner from the left, which is floated beyond the far post. Matic heads it back across goal, and the ball hits Tavares’ raised arm. VAR is taking a look at it, but it’s not overturned. Fernandes to take.

— Manchester United (@ManUtd) April 23, 2022
52nd min: United have a decent spell of possession, but they give away a throw in on the halfway line after Matic takes his eye off the ball and fails to control a simple pass. Arsenal work the ball down the left and find Nuno Tavares breaking into the left side of the area. He cuts in on his foot, evading Dalot’s sliding challenge, but his right footed shot is sliced way off target.
46th min: We’re back underway.
Arsenal’s structure will have been a concern for Mikel Arteta in the first half. Arsenal usually play with one full back tucked inside, and that’s the role Cedric has been playing. He’s had quite a few nervy moments in the first half, and Arteta may look at Takehiro Tomiyasu in the second half, if he’s considered ready for action.
Halftime: Arsenal go in ahead, but you feel there’s a lot more to come in this game.

49th min: Telles takes a shot from the edge of the area. He fires the ball towards the near post, and it’s going in the top corner, forcing Ramsdale into a strong save. The corner is cleared, and Arsenal look to hit United on the counter. It’s worked into Nketiah in the area, where Nketiah goes down. The crowd want a penalty, but play continues. Odegaard shapes a shot from the edge of the area, but it’s too close to De Gea.
46th min: Mikel Arteta has been an animated figure on the edge of his technical area for much of the first half. The fourth official signals five minutes added on. Arsenal have been the stronger side towards the end of the first half, but you wouldn’t bet against United exposing Arsenal on the break.

31st min: The referee goes across to the pitchside monitor. The goal is disallowed for offside, but Arsenal have a penalty for the Telles challenge on Saka. Telles gets a booking. Saka will take the spot kick.
28th min: Arsenal have the ball ball in the back of the net, but it may be ruled out for offside. Saka carries the ball down the right, before driving inside. He combines with Odegaard, who passes the ball back into his path as he enters the area. The ball bounces off Saka’s thigh, as Telles bundles into the back of him. It falls loose to Nketiah, who fires home. VAR seem to have disallowed it, but a penalty may be given against Telles.
— Manchester United (@ManUtd) April 23, 2022
26th min: Nketiah is played in by an Odegaard backheel. He’s on the blind side of the United centre backs, but played onside by Diogo Dalot. He smashes the ball towards goal, but it’s too close to De Gea who pushes it away.
24th min: It’s full backs on top in this game. Cedric gives the ball away, and it’s worked across to Diogo Dalot. He shoots from distance, and it rattles back off the bar.
19th min: Arsenal play out from a goal kick, finding Nketiah on the halfway line. He turns and shakes off Elanga, carrying forward. Left of centre, outside the area, Elanga catches Nketiah while trying to keep pace with him, and Arsenal have a free kick. Odegaard curls his shot over the bar.
17th min: Neither defence is looking particularly solid at the moment, with more goals looking very likely. Elanga is sent through on the right by Ronaldo, and bursts into the area. Tavares stays with him, and Ramsdale comes out to smother. Elanga goes down under pressure from Tavares. He wants a penalty, but there was never enough contact for that.
11th min: Aaron Ramsdale’s attempted pass is intercepted, and Bruno Fernandes takes a shot from the edge of area, with Ramsdale out of his goal. He tries to lift the ball over Ramsdale, but Gabriel is across in time to deflect the shot off target.

He curled towards the far post. De Gea got a hand to it, but didn’t get it away from danger, and Tavares arrives to fire the loose ball home.

1 min to KO: There’s a minute of applause to commemorate the death of Steve Rowley, the former Arsenal chief scout, with both teams lining up around the centre circle ahead of kick off.
3 mins to KO: Mikel Arteta has been emphasising the need for the fans to get behind the team ahead of this game, and they’ve clearly listened. The Emirates is packed ahead of kick off, as the teams head out onto the pitch.
10 mins to KO: Alex Telles will have to be on his game today, up against Bukayo Saka who proved a real handful for Alonso and Sarr at Stamford Bridge. Many will be watching the United defence, to see how the central defensive partnership performs without Harry Maguire.
15 mins to KO: A worrying statistic for that Arsenal backline. Cedric coming in for Holding in an attacking move, and likely means Arsenal will try and play a higher line to squeeze up the pitch, a tactic which Holding isn’t best suited for.
