Maggie Garrett stayed unbeaten in singles, but Newton’s girls tennis team couldn’t get over the hump against Norwalk during a Little Hawkeye Conference matchup at Aurora Heights Park.
The Warriors downed the Cardinals 10-1 after going 8-0 in two-set matches. Newton’s lone win came from Garrett at No. 2 singles.
Garrett is now 6-0 on the season after downing Kelsey Dammeier 4-6, 7-5, 10-3.
Lauryn Garrett lost her match at No. 1 singles in three sets and the Garrett sisters lost their No. 1 doubles match in three. Every other match went two sets.
Lauryn Garrett lost her singles match 4-6, 6-3, 5-10 and the sisters won the first set of their doubles match but lost 6-3, 5-7, 9-11.
Olivia Hotchkin lost her No. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-3 and Hotchkin and Ella Swarts got to 6-4 in the second set.
Roxanna Almazon and Priscilla Timothy and Laura Sander and Josi Hammer each reached 6-3 in the second set of their matches at No. 4 and No. 5 doubles, respectively.
The Cardinals dropped to 2-4 and 0-3 in LHC play. They were scheduled to play at Knoxville on Friday, but that tournament was cancelled.
BOYS
Norwalk 10, Newton 1
NORWALK — Blake Baumgartner broke through at the top of the lineup, but Newton’s boys tennis team lost 10-1 to Norwalk on Thursday during LHC play.
Baumgartner won his No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-4 over Hayden Steele. Norwalk scored nine straight-set wins in the dual.
Every singles match went two sets, but No. 2 John Valtman and No. 4 Kael Swarts both lost competitive matches. Valtman lost 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 and Swarts dropped a 7-5, 6-4 decision.
In doubles, Baumgartner and Evan Marshall played in the meet’s only three-set match but lost 3-6, 6-3, 9-11.
At No. 3 doubles, Seth Adams and Ethan Valtman lost 6-3, 6-3 and David Holmes and Andrew Wiles lost 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 doubles.
