With the NFL Draft rapidly approaching, one of the most familiar faces of draft day revealed he won’t be taking part in this year’s event. Kirk Herbstreit took to Twitter on Monday to reveal he would not be making the trip out to Las Vegas for the 2022 NFL Draft, nor would he be part of the draft coverage, as a result of a medical condition. Herbstreit reveals doctors discovered a blood clot in his system and would be erring on the side of caution with his decision to sit this year’s event out.
Hey guys-wanted to update you on my situation this week. Unfortunately I won’t be part of our ESPN/ABC NFL Draft coverage. Our team in Vegas will have it covered, and I will be watching.
Congrats to all the players! I love this event and look forward to returning next year. pic.twitter.com/UvBsI3TaUV— Kirk Herbstreit (@KirkHerbstreit) April 25, 2022
Herbstreit admitted he was disappointed not to be making the trip out to Vegas for what he described as being one of his favorite times of the year, but his decision to remain home seems to be a wise one. The 52-year-old wished all of the players the best of luck ahead of the draft and said he’d be paying close attention to the coverage of the event.
“Unfortunately, I will not be able to come out to Vegas and be a part of this year’s coverage. Doctors have recently found a blood clot in my system. Very fortunate to have really good doctors, I feel good, but out of an abundance of caution, I think I’m just going to take a step back from this year’s draft coverage,” Herbstreit said.
Herbstreit has been a mainstay of ESPN’s NFL Draft coverage. One of the most popular faces in college football media, Herbstreit accepted a role alongside Al Michaels to cover NFL’s Thursday Night Football coverage for Amazon in 2022. Unfortunately, fans won’t get to see him on-screen offering his analysis for each pick made in the draft.
