Former Vancouver Canucks players Daniel and Henrik Sedin have been added to the organization’s player development department after spending last season in hockey operations, the team announced Monday.
The brothers will be responsible for working with players on and off the ice in Vancouver and with the Abbotsford Canucks, the club’s AHL affiliate.
The Sedins first joined the organization in June 2021, serving within hockey operations as special advisors to the general manager. As new leadership was introduced in December 2021, Daniel and Henrik maintained their roles within hockey operations.
Former NHLers Mikael Samuelsson and Mike Komisarek will also join the player development department, where they will be working with young prospects within the organization, the team said. Assistant general manager Cammi Granato will continue to lead the department, alongside Ryan Johnson, Abbotsford’s general manager and director of player development.
Daniel and Henrik Sedin were drafted second and third overall by the Canucks in the 1999 NHL Draft and played with the team from 2000 until their retirement in 2018. Leaders both on and off the ice for the Canucks, Henrik was awarded the captaincy while Daniel was named as an alternate ahead of the 2010-2011 season.
During their tenure with the team, the Sedins were prolific point-producers, winning two Art Ross trophies and the Ted Lindsay award. Henrik was also the first and only Canuck to win the Hart Memorial Trophy, awarded to the league’s most valuable player.
In a February 2020 ceremony, their numbers were retired by the Canucks organization as part of a celebration to honour the twins’ impact on the team and within the community.
