After only two golfers finished the women’s city tournament in 2018, and no women’s event was contested the next two years, Otter Creek pro Tim Davis got a little creative in reviving the tournament last September.
This year, the women’s city event will return to its traditional summer slot alongside the men’s city tournament. They will be at 8 a.m. July 9 at Greenbelt and noon July 10 at Otter Creek.
Both the men’s and women’s tournaments will have a competitive division, and those golfers will play 18 holes each day. The women also will have a non-competitive division, which will feature only a scramble at 2 p.m. July 10 at Otter Creek.
The women had a competitive and non-competitive division for the first time last year, and the golf on the final day was followed by a social hour with cocktails, hors d’Oeuvres and a band. That will be the case again this year, with the band King Bee and The Stingers from Bloomington beginning to play around 5 p.m. July 10.
“We really didn’t put a whole lot of effort into it (last year), and 36 ladies signed up,” Davis said. “So I thought it went very well, and I would be surprised if we did not get more this year. So we’re just looking to repeat ourselves on that, but putting the men’s component into the charity donation is going to allow us to present a nice check to D.A.R.E.”
D.A.R.E. will be the main beneficiary from this year’s event.
“With having the men’s and women’s tournaments at the same time, we wanted to pick a charity component that is not gender (based),” Davis said. “The small committee that I put together, we really feel that focusing on kids and children right now, the way that the world is, is a good place for us to look to, and we really feel that D.A.R.E. is an outstanding program here in Columbus. It’s already established, and we would like to continue to help them out.”
The deadline to register for the tournaments is 5 p.m. July 7. Cost is $100 for the men’s and women’s competitive divisions and $65 for the women’s non-competitive scramble. The tournament is open to Bartholomew County residents, Otter Creek members and Greenbelt passholders.
