LAKE PLACID — More than 140 regional golfers gathered at the Whiteface Club Sunday, to raise funds for Ron Reid.
Reid, an employee at the Whiteface Club for over 25 years, has ALS. Sunday’s event, in ideal golf conditions, generated donations in greens fees.
The donations were slated to be turned over to Reid on Tuesday to help pay for his medical expenses.
“This really shows not only the generosity of our local golf community but the feelings they have for Ron and what he and his family are going through,” Whiteface Club PGA Professional Perry Babcock said. “It makes all of us proud to come together like this and benefit someone who is so beloved by his friends and has poured so much of himself into our course.”
All skin money was also turned over to Reid, as well as the raffle, which will provide a two-night stay at the Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa, the Whiteface Club’s sister property.
The golf event was a four-person scramble that started bright and early at 7 a.m. in radiant sunshine. In a field of 36 teams, just one stroke separated the top four groups.
Team Gary Ottavinia shot the low round of the day. Ottavinia, joined by Frank Puckhaber, Tim Walford and Mark Zander, posted 13 under par 58 on nines of 28-30. Three teams were a shot behind at 12 under 59, all shooting 28-31.
The tie was broken by a match of cards and saw Team Caroline Roy (Tim Batt, Cornelia Forrence, Henry Forrence) grab second place and golf for four at the Whiteface Club. Team Roger Neill (J. Peter Martin, Randy Quayle, John Baker) was next and took a round of golf at the Lake Placid Club Resort, followed by Team Sandy Caligiore (Jim Hayden, Keith White, Bill Wagle) in fourth place, each collecting $40 gift certificates at the Whiteface Club pro shop.
RockBottomGolf.com provided individual prizes in the form of $50 gift certificates to long drive winners Missy Reid and Jason Parrow, as well as the closest to the pin on the par-three 11th hole to Janet Leonard and Dave Braver.
