Bangladesh National Cricket Team ODI captain Tamim Iqbal, who recently announced his retirement from T20Is, said that Bangladesh are not fully prepared for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, which is set to be held in India.
In the recently concluded three-match ODI series between the West Indies and Bangladesh, which was part of the Bangladesh tour of West Indies 2022, the Tamim Iqbal-led side whitewashed the Nicholas Pooran-led side.
Meanwhile, Tamim said that the ultimate goal of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team is to prepare well and perform well in the mega event, Cricket World Cup 2023.
He added that Bangladesh have started the process of building the team for the tournament and they have a rough idea of the combination they will be fielding.
“Naturally, our goal is the 2023 World Cup and there is no doubt about it and we are in that process (of building the team for the tournament), but to be honest, I don’t want to look too far ahead because you never know what will happen and things like that as to who is injured and who is there in the team and who is not,” Tamim was quoted as saying.
“But I can say I am getting a little bit of idea about what kind of combination I will be playing if one or two key players are missing due to injuries. I won’t say my team is fully ready and all those things, but we are getting some ideas for sure,” he stated.
Earlier, Bangladesh had won the series by 2-1 against the Temba Bavuma-led side in South Africa.
I don’t want to rate this series very highly – Tamim Iqbal
Bangladesh ODI skipper further said that he doesn’t want to rate the series victory over West Indies very highly because they played in spin-friendly conditions which are suited to their style of play.
“I don’t want to rate this series very highly. We have won the series but I am not too excited about it because there is too much help for spinners on this wicket and that is why it is not like we have won the world. When we play on better wickets we have to be better to win the games,” Tamim added.
Bangladesh will next be travelling to Zimbabwe for the six-match limited-overs series, which consists of three T20Is and three ODIs.
