It appears as though I owe all of you an apology. The other day, I wrote an article detailing the lack of depth at quarterback for the Ohio State football team. It did well. Very well, actually. Turns out it was misleading. Very misleading. For that, I do apologize to you all.
The Ohio State University updated the football roster on The Ohio State University’s official athletic website Tuesday. Wanna know what it shows? FIVE quarterbacks. FIVE. Not the three it showed when I used it as a reference for the article. It now shows FIVE. C.J. Stroud, Kyle McCord, and Devin Brown are joined by walk-ons Mason Maggs and Chad Ray. You can look at the official roster by clicking here.
Now, from a fan standpoint finding out there are two additional quarterbacks than I thought is quite welcome news. I’m of the firm belief walk-ons are invaluable to programs. From a journalism standpoint, I’m beyond irritated to have given you the wrong information. More on that later. For now, let’s take a look at the two roster additions.
Mason Maggs is a true freshman whose dad, Bob, was an All-Big Ten center for the Buckeyes back in the mid-80s. The Dublin Coffman product played quarterback for just one season after moving from receiver, but it was a very productive one.
The 6’2”, 218-pound Maggs threw for nearly 1,800 yards and rushed for 861. He accounted for thirty total touchdowns. Chad Ray joined the program in the spring and took part in spring practice. At Scioto High School in Dublin, he hit on sixty percent of his throws for 1,300 yards as a senior. He threw just four interceptions while connecting on ten touchdown passes. Both are going to provide valuable depth and get plenty of scout team work this season.
Once again, I apologize for the misleading information I gave in the article in question. I could easily say it is not my fault, because the official roster I referenced was not up to date, but I refuse to do that. My job is to provide you with facts and accurate information.
Writing these articles may only be a hobby, but I work hard and try to give you a good product-I do not take what I do lightly. The next time I do a story related to the Ohio State roster, you can bet I’ll dig a little deeper to make sure the information I present to you is accurate.
