Former Premier League striker Luis Suarez is on the cusp of an incredible return to his boyhood club ahead of the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
Suarez made the heartwarming announcement on Wednesday morning (AEST) that he’d “reached a pre-agreement” with Uruguay club Nacional.
The Champions League winner began his professional career with Nacional as an 18 year old in 2005.

Meanwhile, Argentina attacker Paulo Dybala has been unveiled as a new AS Roma player in front of a sea of passionate supporters.
Here’s the latest in the Transfer Centre, including an update on Cristiano Ronaldo.
SUAREZ TO SIGN FOR BOYHOOD CLUB
Suarez is looking to confirm his playing future ahead of his fourth World Cup, after leaving Atletico Madrid at the end of last season.
But Suarez, who is Uruguay’s all-time top goal scorer, has revealed on social media that he’s on the brink of returning to a club close to his heart.
The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward told his followers that he was close to signing for Nacional on a three-month deal before the World Cup.
“First of all I would like to say thank you for the great affection shown to me and my family these last few days,” said Suarez in a video published on his social media accounts.
“That touched our hearts at this moment that we had to make a decision.
“It was impossible to waste this opportunity of playing again in Nacional and we have a pre-agreement with the club.
“In the next few hours, details will be finalised and we hope that the agreement we all want will be reached and that we can all enjoy this new stage and see each other in the coming days.”
Suarez rose to footballing stardom during a three and a half year stint with English giants Liverpool, before moving to Barcelona for 80 million Euros.
He enjoyed his most successful spell in Catalonia, winning four Spanish league titles and the Champions League in 2015.
The striker also won La Liga again last year with Atletico Madrid.
But while he’s known for his ability to find the back of the net, Suarez also drew some unwanted controversy throughout his career.
Suarez was sent off for a deliberate handball during the 2010 World cup quarter-finals against Ghana, after he prevented them from scoring what would’ve been a crucial goal.
Ghana missed the subsequent spot-kick and then lost on penalties, with Uruguay progressing to the semi-finals of the tournament.
Four years later in Brazil he bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini, and received a record nine-match ban from FIFA as a result. This was the third time he’d bitten an opposing player.
But many would still consider the star striker a footballing legend for what he’s achieved while playing.

DYBALA UNVEILED IN FRONT OF A SEA OF FANS
Argentina forward Dybala was unveiled as an AS Roma player in front of thousands of passionate supporters.
Sitting relatively still in front of his new fans, Dybala was greeted with flares, chants, flags and more in a stunning video which has to be seen to be believed.
Dybala is a veteran of Italian football at just 28 years old, having started his time in the country with Palermo in 2012.
But his decorated career with Juventus, which included more than 200 appearances, was where he made his name.
In his first press conference since signing his three-year deal, Dybala said that he hopes to use his experience to help Roma’s young squad.
“Obviously I have experience after so many years at Juventus, a team that’s used to winning and transmits that to you from the first day,” he told reporters.
“So I will try to give my maximum even in the dressing room with my team, seeing as we’re a young team, to bring that experience to help to win, help to be positive in the difficult moments there will be during the year.”
Europa Conference League winners Roma, who finished sixth in Serie A last season, announced last week they had signed Dybala after his contract with Juventus expired.
Jose Mourinho has also added 33-year-old former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic to his squad this summer.
RONALDO TO MEET WITH MAN U BOSS
Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is set to meet with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag to discuss his future.
Football insider Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Portugal international still wants to leave the club.
However, Manchester United have insisted that he’s still not for sale.
JUVE AND RAMSEY PART WAYS
Welsh international Aaron Ramsey has left his club with a year left on his contract.
“Aaron Ramsey’s contract with Juventus has been mutually terminated,” the club announced on Twitter.
Ramsey had been loaned out to Scottish giants Rangers last season, and helped his country qualify for the World Cup with a play-off win over Ukraine.
