The Red Sox are set to acquire outfielder Tommy Pham from the Reds for a player to be named, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The clubs have not confirmed the trade. In another move, Boston officially landed catcher Reese McGuire from the White Sox.
Left-hander Jake Diekman is headed to Chicago and Boston will also receive a player to be named or cash in the McGuire deal.
Moments before Cincinnati opened its three-game series vs. the Marlins, Pham was scratched from the lineup and replaced by Matt Reynolds.
Pham, 34, is hitting .238/.320/.374 with 11 homers and 39 RBIs in 91 games. The nine-year veteran signed a one-year, $7.5 million deal with Cincinnati in March that included a $1.5 million buyout on a mutual option for 2023. There was also a $500,000 bonus if he were to be traded.
Pham has not hit a home run since June 30, a span of 25 games. He finished his tenure with the Reds in a 0-for-10 slump after a three-hit game vs. the Marlins on Thursday.
McGuire gives Boston another catcher after the club sent Christian Vázquez to Houston. The 27-year-old has played 53 games for the White Sox this season, batting .225 (34-for-151) with 10 RBIs.
