Matt Coronato and the USA picked up their second win in the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, downing Switzerland 7-1 on Thursday night.
The Flames prospect scored his first goal of the tournament in the victory, giving him two points in his first two games in Edmonton.
After a scoreless first period, the USA poured it on in the second stanza, scoring five goals. Carter Mazuer opened the scoring at 5:54 and while the Swiss were able to equalize quickly thanks to a goal from Joel Henry at 8:25, the Americans quickly quelled any momentum they had. Brock Faber added the USA’s second goal at 11:29, Mazer made it 3-1 at 13:22, and Landon Slaggert picked up the Americans fourth goal at 17:16.
Coronato’s tally came in the final minute of the second period when he was able to redirect Luke Hughes’ shot from the blueline, getting the upper hand on Swiss defender Dario Sidler, who was late getting back.
The USA would add two more goals in the third period, coming off of the sticks of Thomas Bordeleau and Riley Duran.
For a second straight game, Coronato led all skaters with five shots on net. He now has 12 shots through the pair of American wins.
The USA is back in action on Saturday when they face off against Austria.
